Yeah $240+cost of mobo seems like a lot for an older gen cpu especially when you're not really struggling with your current cpu. I'd take above advice and hold off and spend about that same amount on a current gen cpu/mobo when you need it.

Whats the useless piece of software that can't be uninstalled during the process? Maybe you can boot into safe mode and remove it before trying the upgrade.

Check Nvidia settings and see if V-Sync is set to on and override in there.

Yeah both of those are garbage. Look at http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html and try to find something tier 1 or 2, especially if you're overclocking.

PSU looks like a weak link especially if you're overclocking. Seems a little late in the game and close to the next gen to drop $600 on a new gpu. Are you running into graphics issues or you're just wanting to upgrade something?

I would advise you to run memtest for multiple passes overnight or something. Sometimes the bugs can be hard to find but just bad enough to cause you problems. I was getting BSOD and even gpu not initializing on boot, turned out to be bad memory module which only showed up after the 6th memtest...

I forgot to ask, are you using the stock psu?

I don't think a 2600k would bottleneck a 970, for sure wouldn't bottleneck a 960. I think there's about $100 difference between 960 and 970 and I'd say in game difference would be 960 = medium/high 970 = high/ultra
