News House cleaners find two of the world's first desktop PCs in random boxes — Intel 8008-powered Q1 PC has 16KB of memory, 800 kHz CPU

I can relate even though I've never heard of these computers. I built a 8008 computer back in the day (RGS008) and thought it the most amazing thing imaginable at least until I built a 8080 system that got the clock up to 2mHz and carried 16mB of memory (IIRC).

News $500 Audiophile SATA SSD Cable With Superstar Crystals Listed

Well, yeah, sure. But you don't have access to their mystical wood and plumbing flex and sparkly things. Those are what make the magic work. But of course you could go into business making your version and then sell them to carefully self-selecting fools. Apparently there are loads of them around.

News DIYer Passive Cools Core i9 with 8-Pound Copper Block

Not even a good test was run. Clearly the copper block will slowly reach some steady-state between the core temperature and the ambient and with the small surface area it will not be advantageous to the processor. More interesting would be to machine numerous vertical fins into the cylinder so...

Review Creality Ender 3 S1 Pro Review: All the Bells and Whistles

"All the Bells and Whistles" All? How about 'many'? I don't see multiple extruders or multiple materials or any great speed, all of which seem to be the current standard. Sure, for a relatively low-cost machine it looks to check many of the boxes but it is certainly not tricked out to the max.

News 77TB of Research Data Lost Because of HPE Software Up

You beat me to it. I'm just a simple little private user with nothing beyond financial records and family momentos to protect but I invariably have two generations of fully verified off-site backup in my bank deposit box and a couple more stored in house. Sure my off-site backups drives are only...

News Report: Intel Pushing ATX12VO Power Connector for 12th Gen Alder Lake CPUs

At the cost of even more cable clutter couldn't somebody simply make and old-to-new adapter? Most of my builds are a shambles inside so one more bit of kit wouldn't make a difference unless it got caught in a fan.

News Alienware Aurora R11 Has the Weirdest Liquid GPU Loop We've Ever Seen

Or they could go all Cray on it and fill the whole bloody computer with cooling fluid and just pump that around through a refrigeration unit. Old, proven tech.

Review be quiet! Shadow Rock 3 Review: Quiet Cooling on a Budget

"Lack of RGB lighting options" Is that a reason do downscore? This is a device meant to cool CPUs. You admit that it does it well. If you are going to chop the score because it doesn't do things other than its job then you might as well knock off points because it won't mow the lawn or cook a...

Why I Won’t Use Less than 32GB of RAM

Meh. I have 32gB and have had it for a few years now. I thought that it would be a big help so when the proper memory sticks went on special I ordered them and doubled my memory. Know what? I have yet to see my memory usage grow enough to justify it -- it sits at around 26% right now and that is...

News Intel Announces Socketed 56-Core Cooper Lake Processors

This will reveal my ignorance, but how does one cool a 400W processor? I'm thinking that some sort of massive copper block with large volumes of refrigerated water might just do it. I can't imagine any sort of air cooling doing the job.

233 days of power on, but only 7 start/stop count. Is this legit?

I have a couple of 3tB WD Red drives as well as a some 6tb variants in my Drobo 5N and , though I'm not going to remove one to check, it is almost certain that I'd find the same sort of numbers since the only times it is down is when there is an out-and-out power failure and some of these drives...

Wireless access point without ethernet cable

Seems like a lot of work to provide network access to a single computer than happens to not be wi-fi enabled. Why not just go to Amazon and search for 'wi-fi dongle' and pick one? Cheap and easy and requiring no great brain sweat.

Drop Test: What's the Toughest Smartphone?

Not a very complete review in that it completely ignores phones that are actually made for rugged use. Example: https://www.amazon.com/Sonim-XP7-XP7700-16GB-Smartphone/dp/B010FQYRLQ?tag=toughgadget-20 But there a at least ten more that outdo anything tested for this article. Google is your...
