If your bad PCIe slot turns out to not be the issue, then like cin19 said try making sure that the previous card's drivers are completely removed, then reinstall the new drivers. I had some weirdness going on when I upgraded to this same card and that turned out to be the cause.

Yeah, as tea urchin mentioned the PSU is probably what's important here. My bet would be that as the graphics card tries to draw extra power as it's usage increases (i.e. as the windows desktop loads) it's hitting the max draw from the psu which then causes a crash as it can't function properly...
