Thanks so much for your help. Having tried everything, even tightening the screws on the case (which was recommended for another model) I'll be looking at an Asus - or just not moving the notebook without closing it first! But I appreciate the time you spent on this.

With the automatic restart disabled, it closed down again. Next step? Whoops! I tried again to replicate the shut down, while I was in the BIOS. This time, rather than shaking it, I set it down on the table beside me and two times out of three it shut down. Does that say it's a hardware issue...

I'm using Windows 7. I've changed my desktop to Linux, but need to hold one computer in the house for a thing or two I can't use there, like TomTom.

I went to the BIOS and shook the notebook - vigorously - and it did not shut down. This problem doesn't happen every time it's moved - often when I'm handing it to my husband to show him something on the screen - but enough to be frustrating. As a rule, I either shut it down or close the case...

I will add some information to my original issue. I had had problems, perhaps with overheating, but I cleaned out vents, checked temps, updated bios, and that issue seems to have been corrected. I have been checking temperature and I do not feel this isnow a heat issue. With that issue it shut...

I saw the exact problem as mine on 6/3/13, with no answer. When I move the notebook to another person or put it down, without closing it, it announces it is shutting down and does so. If I am quick enough, I can tell it to cancel and it does, but usually I'm not seeing that screen as I am moving...
