Don't skimp on the things that will be used in your future builds, and the things you touch/see. IE: spend money on a good case, psu, keyboard, mouse, screen.

Have you checked the USB stick you are using? Try another stick and/or try the stick in another machine. Or better still, throw the ancient Mac in the skip and buy a real computer!! :)

Random problems with an old PC? Check for blown caps on the Mobo. The capacitors can cause CPU failure and CPU failure like symptoms. PSU testers are cheap, get one.
