IF someone brought me a computer with this combinaton of symptoms first thing I would do is take an air duster can to it... When is the last time you did this? Overall this sounds thermal related.. esp since its an HP laptop which are notorious for thermal issues in my experience.

Have you tried rolling back your graphics driver update?

Did your friend accidentally turn on Filter Keys(or other Ease of Access related stuff) on their profile? If the keyboard works fine logging in, then the issue is likely a setting tied to the user profile such as the Ease of Access settings.

Is the BIOS/UEFI set to boot to that specific drive?

Did you have a different mobo in it before? Have you tried reinstalling Windows? Windows installs don't always play nice with running on different mobos with different feature sets, a reinstall may be a good idea so it grabs the correct drivers/chipset software. On another note if your mobo...

Are you using a 32bit version of Windows?

If the goal is to start fresh with a copy of Windows.. do another reinstall and make sure you format all the partitions on the drive.. If it is an OEM version of Windows you may need to leave partition 3(if memory serves)
