I wouldn't suggest buying a router/switch/hub. If it doesn't work with a crossover than adding another layer won't resolve it. I'm 90% sure it has something to do with packet filtering on the laptop blocking the "echo request". I'd check again on the laptop and disable the FW and AV for...
