I don't buy hard drives for their burst transfers.

    USB 2.0 HDs - 2nd generation ?

My facts. I didn't post any facts. I didn't give any numbers and as of now ONE IDE hard drive CAN NOT sustain 57.22MB per second. The latest Western Digital drive barely gets to 50MB/sec. You might want to think about how much burst transfers really matter?

    Random Restart?!?

Is your motherboard ACPI Complient? I have a MSI K7T-Turbo that has a KT133A chipset that wasn't fully. I had errors out the yeng-yang in my event viewer until I updated the BIOS. That took care of those error's but I never had problems with random rebooting.

    maxtor hard drives

Some people in the forum have seen some issues, but I haven't seen any issues directly. With the drives I use in the work place that are part of the D740X series, they have no problems and have had them since they have been released. I have had my home hard drives running for close to two...

    USB2.0 Hard drives

Maxtor doesn't offer a 7200RPM USB 2.0 hard drive. As long as the motherboard and OS support USB 2.0, having DDR333 doesn't matter. USB isn't supported in the configuration that your looking for. If you want to boot to the USB drive you may want to use a Macintosh. Your performance is poor...

Why don't you go someplace that rents them out, and do it yourself?

    120gb + recomended hdds?

Maxtor has a D540X series of hard drive that offer 160GB. The only other mfg. that has topped that is Seagate with a 180GB SCSI hard drive.

    40Gb = 37.1Gb ??

You also need to understand that it's not the hard drive company that does it on purpose. It's the government doing what they do best. It's a NIST (National Institute of standards and technology) requirement set by the government.

    USB 2.0 HDs - 2nd generation ?

USB 2.0 interface is fast. The hard drive isn't. They need to expand the technology of hard drives before they take full advantage of the USB 2.0 interface. I myself haven't heard of anything new with USB coming in the near future, but Firewire/1394 is suppose to up the speed by two times...

USB 2.0 external HD, adapters-PCI and CardBus

I like my USB 2.0 drive better then my Firewire drive. I think it's awesome. I use the Maxtor USB 2.0 hard drive and 2.0 PCI controller. Adaptec makes a 2.0 cardbus you might want to look into.

    USB Version

That's a hardware spec. You would probably want to consult the motherboard manual or the mfg. of the computer.

    Hard Driver Errors

Do you know the manufacture of the drive? Have you tried looking at any diagnostics programs. The best diag that your going to find is from the mfg. I would be looking at running a Low Level Format on the drive and maybe looking at getting it replaced.
