News Microsoft Repositions 7TB 'Project Silica' Glass Media as a Cloud Storage Solution

I highly suspect the exaggerated lifespan is BS. Glass isn't really a solid - it flows exceptionally slowly. Yeah, it take a long time. After a hundred years the top of a pane of glass is visibly thinner than the bottom. This very slow flow is inconsequential for almost any usage, but when...

News Scramble to Validate Superconductor Breakthrough Confirms Zero Resistance, With a Catch

Expensive material components + operating temps that require liquid N2 = nothingburger. There are obviously benefits to superconducting traces, but just adding more parallel processing can deliver the same boost for much less money. Maybe they can find some applications in space/orbit.

Review WD Red Plus 12TB HDD Review: Seeing Red

The problem is that there are only three manufacturers of HDD and they have decided not to compete with each other. Prices have been dropping steadily (price per MB/GB/TB) since they were invented decades ago until three years ago. Since 2020 the price for the exact same type of drive and...

Still too expensive at $16.70/TB. NAND is almost down to $30. Tick Tock spinning rust.

News Grab an RTX 4070 Ti Gaming Rig for $1,650 at Newegg: Real Deals

That was my conclusion, but I can say that it didn't feel good paying for that 7900xt.

News Grab an RTX 4070 Ti Gaming Rig for $1,650 at Newegg: Real Deals

Still a hefty premium. I just (still installing the rest of the apps) built a new PC and spent about $1300 and that included a 7700x, 7900XT, and a 2TB Samsung 980 which exceed the $1650 deal's specs.

News The Lowest Price on Every GPU for Prime Day 2023

Should probably have FPS/$ based upon 1440 and not 1080. It isn't 2013 anymore. Heck, the consoles all do 4K - should probably move up to that.

News Purported Intel Core i7-14700K Benchmarks up to 20% Faster in Multi-Threaded Workloads

Two more P cores, four more E cores, more cache, and a hotter clock. It should be a lot faster in multithreaded tasks. It will also likely cost a bit over $400 and provide only moderate boost to gaming performance.

Review Seagate FireCuda 540 SSD Review: Premium Performance Meets Outstanding Warranty

At 5x the price of the cheaper 4x4 modules this is just a toy for the rich so they can save maybe a whole second every time they load a modern game.

Review Seagate FireCuda 8TB HDD Review: A Solid Storage Solution

Nope, I am just annoyed at their recent trend (in the last 3 years) of not dropping in price at all. There haven't been any technological jumps in spinning rust during this time period. They haven't suddenly gotten any faster. The remaining three manufacturers on earth have pretty much decided...

News Jacketless Jensen Promised "Inexpensive" GPUs Back in 2011

That is the bare hardware level, but the nature of how consoles operate and the simple fact that the games are coded specifically for them makes them effectively much more powerful than their hardware would suggest. Just look at modern games like Last of Us volume 1. You need a 4060ti to match...
