Question Need help/advice with heavy workstation build

Ah, sorry we actually do have a PSU picked out, just forgot to add it: Corsair HXi Series 1500W 80+ Platinum Power Supply My main concern is around the CPU for the kind of work we’re doing.

Question Need help/advice with heavy workstation build

I'm trying to scope out a really meaty workstation build, and would love a sense check/some advice. We are going to be using the workstation for three main things: Houdini sims (flip/pyro mainly) Redshift rendering Unreal Engine development Here are the current specs of the proposed build...

Black screen, fans on full, crash - why?

So I tried each card out, and it seems like the card I had in the first position does have a fault. This seems to be something EVGA are aware of, and are doing RMAs for the faulty cards: Reddit thread about it...

Black screen, fans on full, crash - why?

I have a completely new machine with the following specs: Intel i7-6850K (not currently overclocked) Asus X99 Deluxe II 64GB RAM (4x16G CorsVengLPX DDR4 2400C14) 2 x EVGA 1080 1000W EVGA SuperNOVA Plat PSU I've just been trying to play Just Cause 3, and three times in a row the game has...

Confused about PCIe lanes on my motherboard

Hey, thanks for your response. So what I realised is that the U.2 connector seems to be unaffected by the 2nd GPU, so I could get a drive like the NVMe 2.5" U.2 PCIe SSD 400GB, have the Thunderbolt on the lowest PCIe so there is a gap for the fan, and all should be good (I think). Thanks for...

Confused about PCIe lanes on my motherboard

OK, so I've done some more digging and it seems like the M.2 socket shares bandwidth with the PCIe lane 3, making the 2nd GPU run at 8x instead of 16x. I'm not entirely clear how much of a practical difference that makes though... how crippled will a 1080 GPU be when stepped down to 8x instead...

Confused about PCIe lanes on my motherboard

I'm putting together a new build, and confused about how the PCIe lanes work on the motherboard I've chosen. I'm going to be using the Asus Deluxe II, with a 40 lane CPU (i7 6850K), and two EVGA 1080 GPUs. The GPUs are 16 lanes each, and I need Thunderbolt so I'm getting the Asus ThunderboltEX...

VR Development / VFX Build – Around £2000 ($2600) if possible

Ah, fair enough! Can I also ask why you chose the Asus rather than EVGA 1080 card? I was searching for the difference and seems like lots of people favour the EVGA one, mainly due to EVGA's support as well as it's meant to be a bit quieter. What's your thinking? Thanks again.

VR Development / VFX Build – Around £2000 ($2600) if possible

Hi, I'm savvy with the software I use, but a bit clueless regarding hardware for custom PC builds, because I have been on OSX for the last 10 years. I'm now about to start working on some VR development, so I need/want a powerful PC build for that, which also works well for the apps I continue...

    Need help with workstation build

Hey okcnaline: can you explain why you would choose a Quadro over dual Titan X? From what I've been reading, Quadro is more useful for things like CAD and scientific software. Apparently in the past they held more precedence for general 3D work, but not so much anymore. Is that not true? Thanks!

    Need help with workstation build

Hi, I'm looking to build a workstation PC for my company to serve a few different tasks, as I wear quite a few hats in the company. I'm a 3D generalist, using apps like Maya, C4D (Octane), Houdini and Nuke. I use a few Adobe CC apps: Premiere, AE, and Photoshop primarily. I'm also moving...
