The VRM can't handle a 5700x, that board is about as bad as it gets for am4, you'll fry your motherboard in no time, you could try putting some heatsinks on the VRM and a fan blowing directly onto it, I would just get a new motherboard personally though.

Well, to be honest I messed up, I thought I'd reset the bios but I hadn't actually done so (I have now) and wasn't paying attention to anything but the ram. All is good now at 1600mhz. I can only assume it was an overclocking issue with the cpu and that the newer ram isn't quite as stable, maybe...
