CPU VID - invariant of a particular CPU? or a setting on Mobo?

Sorry for the delay, and thanks again for the great explanation. Meanwhile I have determined through experiments that the CPU Voltage setting on my motherboard determines the MAXIMUM voltage that is supplied (at max load). The adaptive thing does seem to be working, but the wording was a bit...

CPU VID - invariant of a particular CPU? or a setting on Mobo?

Many thanks Techgeek, that was most helpful! So if VID is a table of voltages as best determined by Intel, then motherboards should be using the approach of adding an offset in case of overclocking... then ignoring the VID and directly setting a static voltage would not be as good, right? The...

CPU VID - invariant of a particular CPU? or a setting on Mobo?

I currently use an old P45 chipset + Core 2 Quad Q6600 PC, and am currently trying to really understand OCing. I'm getting confused about VID.... There seem to be two largely-incompatible interpretations of it. ■ Anandtech seems to indicate that it is a setting for the maximum CPU voltage. ■...

How do I detect an FSB bottleneck

I tried that. For darksiders it seems to have increased the max FPS. But not the minimum... there are still locations where framerate is around 20. The game Witcher (1) is even more peculiar. The place I tested (Act 4: Lakeside) gives me a min of 25 fps, standing still(!) at one particular...

    Q6600 temperatures on stock @ ~35 C ambient

Thanks.... Undervolting did the trick. Right now am running at 333 MHz FSB, for 3.0GHz max, at what is called as 1.2225 V in the BIOS ( I mean, I dunno what the actual voltage is) for Vcore. It did stock on 1.1625 V. But Prime95 detected hardware failure when I overclocked it. It runs to a max...

How do I detect an FSB bottleneck

I am running Darksiders on a Q6600 + Radeon HD 6850 with MSI P45 platinum. At certain situations I get only 15-20 fps. The funny thing is, neither the CPU(62%) nor GPU(60%) was running at full load. So I now suspect FSB to be the bottleneck. But how do I test it? I am pretty sure that it's not...

How to extract maximum juice out of my "rig"

Ah I had forgotten about conflicts with space required by the heatsink... Since a CPU cooler gives more immediate return, will probably get that first... possibly will take entire case to shop and get it fitted there, to avoid confusion later.. Looking at the vast choice of cases I'm lost...

How to extract maximum juice out of my "rig"

Certainly not branded... here's a pic And not enough clearance to pass any cable underneath... just enough for any pins of chips on mobo to not touch the other side... I currently have the stock q6600 cooler. Would a nice case with good airflow be better than a new CPU cooler for heat...

    Q6600 temperatures on stock @ ~35 C ambient

Thanks for the follow-up.. I took a few screenshots to illustrate the situation (picture worth a thousand words etc :) ). Load is Prime95 small FFTs for around ten minutes, except when it overheated. Idle temperatures : Stock Idle temperatures : 2700Mhz (300 x 9) Load temperatures : Stock...

How to extract maximum juice out of my "rig"

Will coolers be transferable to haswell too? I am not familiar with it, but heard that placement of mounting holes is the key to ensuring compatibility... I know about Hyper212, any others like it which are universally compatible? my current case most certainly does not have any good airflow...

How to extract maximum juice out of my "rig"

Well it so happens that I couldn't pass up a very nice deal for MSI P45 Platinum motherboard used, and so bought it for 3000 INR =~ 60$. So you suggest SSD as the most worthwhile upgrade? Makes sense... What about cabinet and CPU cooler? Since they should be transportable across newer platforms?

    Q6600 temperatures on stock @ ~35 C ambient

Hi guys, I had a Q6600 G0 on DG33FB intel mobo for 5 years now. Just yesterday, I bought an old MSI P45 Platinum. The board is great, but my temperatures are quite high. I am in Bangalore, India, which is nowadays quite hot, at around 30-35 degrees, but even then my prime95 (small FFTs) full...

How to extract maximum juice out of my "rig"

So I bought my tower in 2008, with a Q6600, an Intel DG33FB. Last year I upgraded it with a Radeon HD6850, 6GB of RAM, 1 TB HDD, etc. I am experiencing CPU bottlenecking in a few games, preventing me from getting the kind of game performance I need. So I want to do something about it now. Now...
