    X-Fi XtremeGamer or XtremeMusic

The XGamer version does indeed have sound memory, 64 MB if I remember correctly. There are a few games starting to come out that cannot run in the highest sound quality without this onboard memory and it will probably be necessary for whatever EAX is next too. I'd go for the XGamer...even though...

    RAID headaches

They are two identical DiamondMax+ 60 30.7GB drives and I downloaded the util of the drives' support pages on the Maxtor site.

    RAID headaches

Yes IDE RAID, not making myself clear. I was going to take the drives off the RAID channels and reconnect them to IDE0 and use the Powermax (from Maxtor, same as the drives) to do a low level format. Do you think that fdisk /mbr will be enough?

    RAID headaches

Erm, I could try deleting the RAID array and re-creating it. Just to clarify I have previously been using one of the drives as a standard IDE drive not as part of a RAID array.

    RAID headaches

I've seen this article and I could try to do a system restore but it doesn't identify or fix the problem. As I say the only thing that I can think of is the line in the RAID installation instructions that says that the controller must see the drive as 'pristine'. Has anyone else had any...

    RAID headaches

Well considering that this RAID card is to replace the function on my motherboard that doesn't work at all and so far I've thrown £170 at the problem, oh no wait I forgot to include an £90 power supply. I'm ready for last resorts.

    RAID headaches

To keep things quick and simple - just got an adaptec 1200 RAID card however after setting up the RAID 0 (2 disk) array I installed XP. After 'Booting windows for the first time' shutting down and restarting the machine gives a '\Windows\System32\Config\' is missing or corrupt - run the repair...

    RAID problems?

I'll look into it. Although it would appear that the XP drivers have just mysteriously materialised on the Giga-byte site. Unfortunately my brand new power supply gave up the ghost last night. GRR Someday I'll get this computer working!

    RAID problems?

I'm running my computer with no case at the moment since I have a good idea that I'm going to have to take it apart again. Since its an manufacturer integrated chipset Promise do not support it directly (I have to get Gigabyte's ones)and XP doesn't detect the array at all. IDE cables are fine...

    RAID problems?

I don't overclock it at the moment, infact after gettting it back from being 'repaired' if I let BIOS autoselect the FSB it selects 100 instead of 133 therefore seriously underclocking both memory and processor and it even seems to be less stable.

    RAID problems?

I've now upgraded the power supply to a 430W and I still can't run RAID in a stable state. UDMA mode seems to have data transfer errors as well. Any ideas?

    RAID problems?

I've just had my motherboard, a GA-7DXR repaired by my supplier as the onboard Promise chip seemed to have gone funky and would no longer let me write. Now I've got it back and I am trying to set up W98 on a 2+0 RAID array but after I install an amount of drivers into the fresh install I get a...

Can't Shut'er Down - Help Stop the Madness!

Anybody know anything about Windows 98 taking a very very long time to shut down? As in I say shut down then go away to make a cuppa and come back and watch TV and it turns off about 10 mins after the shutdown command. Probably crap drivers.

    Woes of the GA-7DXR

I agree the board does come with VIA drivers for its southbridge. (IDE Busmaster) and AMD driver comes with the admonishment not to use AMD drivers with anything other than AMD southbridges.

    Woes of the GA-7DXR

Good advice, ta muchly. Never heard of that requirement before but after ripping out one of the DIMMS and only having a graphics card in it my system was stable enough to load Black and White on. Yeah. Now all I have to do is see if the memory was interfering with my Promise controller in which...
