News Google tool spurs contest to Run RISC-V on AMD Zen CPUs: But is it possible?

The offered prize money (less than $3000) is way to little for this complex task. I think you could realistically see some submissions if you increase the prize 100-fold.

News Nvidia RTX 5090's 16-pin power connector hits 150C in reviewer's thermal camera shots

You do realize that the Nvidia RTX 5090 reference design connects all those tiny wires on the PCB immediately after the connector, right? You could easily replace the connector with a pair of thick wires soldered on the PCB without any additional changes to the design. I'm looking forward...

News 12VHPWR adapters sporting heatsinks and thermal pads show how problematic the connector is

How about using connector designed for high current from the start? For example, XT-90 has been demonstrated to work well in drones so surely it would work with GPUs, too.

News Nvidia's RTX 50-series drivers feel half-baked, focus too much on MFG

The idle power consumption seems totally insane! 90 W?? I'm using RTX 3060 on Linux and my idle consumption for the GPU is 14-15 W and even that feels too high when the rest of whole desktop system needs about the same while idling.

News Nvidia criticizes AI PCs, says Microsoft's 45 TOPS requirement is only good enough for 'basic' AI tasks

I predict that we're going to see 50-100 TOPS of AI performance out of CPU and in addition to that, you need proper GPU for graphics. The AI in CPU is going to calculate AI stuff for games while GPU is working on graphics. 100 TOPS is still 100 trillion operations per second and that's quite...

News ChatGPT plays Red Dead Redemption II — AI vision system was overwhelmed

You have to remember that this game was designed for humans and the UI is result of a lot of playtesting with actual humans. Imagine a human trying to play a game originally optimized for a robot!

Tested: Windows 11 Pro's On-By-Default Encryption Slows SSDs Up to 45%

I think this is just a demonstration of low quality implementation by Microsoft. Modern CPUs should be fast enough to encrypt AES 256 around 1–2 GB/s per CPU core. Yes, that means that if you have Samsung 990 Pro, sequential writing to it using AES256 would be limited to 1–2 GB/s if Bitlocker...

News Samsung Launches 990 Pro Series PCIe 4.0 SSDs With up to 7,450 MB/s

I agree. Samsung 970 Pro was a very good product, albeit quite expensive. I hope this 990 Pro would actually match the 970 Pro unlike the 980 series. (Looking at random 4K read performance with shallow queue depth, especially QD1 and QD2...)

News Intel's Optane Business Haemorrhaged Over Half a Billion Dollars in 2020

I think the problem is that they were over-promising and fixed the price to high. Intel 905P is still hands down the best drive I've ever used but they should still market it as a really fast SSD only. They current keep saying that it's not an SSD so it will not be included in most SSD reviews...
