    Probably a hardware fault with the reader. As a last ditch attempt, shine a torch into the SD card slot. You never know something like a staple stuck inside could be causing it short out. Failing that, just use a USB reader.

    What fzabkar said is correct - sometimes raw recovery or file carving is the only option. While these "partition recovery" tools sound very promising - most of them don't actually recover your partition because the metadata is deleted.

    Power off system. Remove the disk from the system. Re-seat the disk. Power up system and re-try.

    As others have pointed out this is most likely a sector size issue. However, also bear in mind that different onboard chipsets in hdd docks can sometimes vary results in terms of disk access. I try to use hdddocks which use Asmedia chipsets as opposed to JMicron.
