I am aware of the dangers associated with this, such as one drive failing will get rid of data on both. What other reasons are there? I am not fully convinced that its bad enough to not try.

Even mid-high tier builds have trouble running Planetside 2 during large fights. I have a gtx 1060 and an fx 6300, and in 90~ player fights I get around 25 fps. With your specs, I would turn down graphics settings all the way to improve performance.
