The drives are almost 10 years old. They are Western Digital Red drives, they have the SATA connection. I back up everything on them to an external hard drive weekly. It would be easier to transfer them over, but if the consensus is that I would be better getting new drives, I will buy an NAS...

My NAS Is nearly 15 years old. If I was to get a new NAS would I be able to just transfer the drives, or would I have to reformat them?

I only use the Vista PC for ripping/storing music, and transferring to my NAS. Internet access is disabled on that PC.

The hardware firewall, in my router. I also have Norton 360.

Is that the Windows firewall?

I've thought about this, but would a new NAS work with my old Vista PC, from 2009, which I use to rip/store my music, then upload to the NAS.

SMB 1.0 is enabled. Would Windows 11 be able to see my Netgear Stora if I disabled SMB, and would this be safe?

The NAS is a Netgear Stora. It's several years old, but works ok with other computers. I don't know what O/S it is using. SMB is enabled.

I've checked, the SMB is the same on my laptop as it is on my desktop.

Yesterday I borrowed a friend's laptop (almost the same as mine, also using Windows 11) and I have exactly the same problem with that laptop. I'm wondering if it's something to do with Windows 11, maybe one of the updates, as it used to work fine accessing my NAS.

Thanks everyone for your replies. As it only has one memory slot, I have decided I'm going to get 16GB. Scary to think that when I got my first Windows computer, in 1992, that only had 2MB!

It definitely only has one memory slot, and that has 4GB in it, which is what it came with.

It's an HP Pavilion 14-ce0524. It has removable RAM, and one slot.

My laptop, a four year old HP Pavilion 14, has 4GB of RAM. It has the option to take up to 16GB. I realise that increasing to 8GB would speed it up, but would going to 16GB make any noticeable difference over 8GB?
