if you like your keyboard/mouse combo get an active ps/2 to usb adapter. It will have 2 ps/2 inputs for the keyboard and mouse and a single usb plug to plug into your computer....

run coretemp or similar. had a similar issue recently where the cpu was over heating and system board was shutting it down (bad seating of heatsink). By the time I fully tracked down the problem I had apparently fried the cpu, oh well.

what are the beeps codes being produced? I'd agree, either a bad ram stick (try 1 stick at a time if you have more than one) or video card but the beep codes should indicate which.

shro - I generally sit mine on top of the box the motherboard came in on my desk when I do the initial setup prior to putting it in the case... could put it right on the desk if you wanted to... just not on top of a static bag, plastic bag, Styrofoam, etc...

start at the basics... disconnect everything except video, one stick of ram and the power supply. You might want to take everything out of the case again too while doing this to ensure you do not have a short somewhere..
