I had the same sort of problem. It turned out to be one of the phone lines was poor quality to the jack. I solved the problem by using a powerline network. jb

Had you thought of powerline? I switched to it when the mice ate my network cables. If you only want to use it for a couple of years it can be a quite cheap method. A speed test seems to show mine is just as quick anywhere as straight from the modem. JB

It depends on what distance you want to use the wi-fi over and intervening walls. I use powerline, it's probably cheaper to buy a kit and seems quick enough and reliable. I have the whole house set up using them, and 3 different brands all work together OK. I used to have the house networked...

Don't forget if you do an upgrade, it takes a VERY long time. I did a Win 7 computer the other day (i7, 16gig RAM). It only had on the motherboard drivers and 3 minor programs. I started at 5pm and it finished at 9am next daynext day. JB

If it's only in one place on a carpet, it could be static electricity, the case is grounded and you are not. Have you changed clothes recently, or tried touching something which is earthed? JB

Have you tried Gparted, (Found on most Puppy live CD's). I use it a lot, and sometimes find I have to use the set flags option. I sometimes delete the partition, format to Linux , then delete the partition again and reformat to NTFS; it seems to solve a lot of odd problems doing it that way. JB

I agree with darkbreeze, probably a hard disk fault. Try running chekdisk or something similar. Alternatly, pick up a throw-away computer and get the hard drive out of that. JB

Run memtest86 before you do anything. This will tell you if i's the RAM or not. Even new sticks can have faults. JB
