Well I decided to return it and it's working perfectly now after they've sent it back. What an absolute pain but I'm glad it's finally resolved and I don't have to worry anymore. Thanks for the answers.

well I've bought a new surge protector, but the random shut offs continue in about the same way (this time the intervals were 1. 3 minutes; 2. 30 seconds; 3. 15 seconds; 4. 10 seconds; 5. near instant shut down on boot; 6. boots fine and runs the rest of the day)
