No you don't however it is preferable. Yes, it would make it a lot easier You don't need to change anything, just move your mouse into the direction of the other monitor until it goes onto the other one, the keyboard doesn't need anything done. Depending on what you want to do with it.

I don't have another computer in the house which is an issue. I can use it on the front port but it's apparently going to be of lower quality as it doesn't take directly from the motherboard.
