SOLVED (Sort of) Looks like Linux is working perfectly. The answer is seemingly that windows no longer supports my hardware.

It's a 6 year old build. I'm pretty sure temps were ok. It seemed as though PC ran fine with no internet, but internet caused force updates which caused crashing

I will have to reinstall windows to check this as it won't boot into window anymore. Just the recovery options.
