OK, I found a fix (for me at least), I hope it helps someone else. Try opening task scheduler, go to the ASUS folder and disable anything in there that may be causing the problem, for me it was i-Setup002956. You may have fixed it by now but hopefully this helps someone else fix this problem...

I don't know about needing a new card to play the latest releases at this stage, I play almost every major release in med/high settings (with dx10 of course) on my 4870 at 1920x1080 without any problems at all. I am getting a 670 or 680 in a couple of weeks but there is still quite a bit of life...
