Well, I decided to try replacing the backlight bulb. A real replacement was easy to find and it'll arrive later this week. Hopefully the bulb is just going out. If that doesn't fix it I'll try replacing the inverter with one that is hopefully compatible, since the part number for mine is unfindable.

EDIT: symptoms, I haven't confirmed 100% it's the inverter, just a reasoned guess. What happens is when I turn the laptop on the screen and the backlight turn on. 9 times out of 10, the backlight will then immediately turn off (the screen itself works fine, always). Jiggling the screen does...
