    I also noticed that when I go to Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network Connections then it shows: Local Area Connection Network cable unplugged ... Could it just be a broken adapter? The ethernet cable doesn't click when I insert it.

    Thanks for you suggestion, but it didn't work. I disabled the network adapter, then uninstalled the ethernet adapter (the only other adapter listed besides wireless was 'Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller', which I assume was the right one).     In the next few hours I'll be building my first computer. The easiest and most convenient place for me to do it is on a large plastic fold-out table. Is this safe? It seems like something that could hold some static. (I do have an antistatic strap) Thanks in advance
