I have a problem with my DVD Writer in Windows 8.1 (64 bit)...after inserting disk (either blank or readab le), the computer hangs, and the only exit is to shut down the machine. Device Manager shows the unit as installed and working correctly. I've tried all the following steps with no joy...

Yeah, thats my thinking too, but the battery snapped into place just like it should and appears to be tightly in place. There must be some other explanation, but what could it be?
