Tom's Intl. $750 Cheap Computing Challenge

pcfxerRight, and the interpretation of that would be: The Wii provides consumers the best overall platform for the money. However, why not? I still think a "points" system is the best way to go and one that Tom's should seriously consider for these types of articles. I agree with the idea, just...

Tom's Intl. $750 Cheap Computing Challenge

V3NOMgood idea except get more points for a win... unless they have a PC less than $10, they would lose many more points than they would gain.great idea in theory though. "And the winner is: The Nintendo Wii!" It could fail to run 20 tests and still end up with a final score of -1200 and beat...

Tom's Intl. $750 Cheap Computing Challenge

chyll2@siffyI only have 3 $50 titles installed on my PC and yet my 250gb drive is barely enough for me since I dont use my PC for Games alone.Media files is barely enough to be stored on a 150gb specially on a 60gb drive. About comparison of the hard drives, I think they already made an article...

Tom's Intl. $750 Cheap Computing Challenge

pauldhProblem is, we couldn't even install the test suite on a 60GB drive. Could have trimmed this down, but there was about 150GB used on the test drive, and if keeping the system for daily use, how much more would we need? I wouldn't have even considered less than 250GB of storage, but even...

Tom's Intl. $750 Cheap Computing Challenge

Why use a rotating drive at all if performance + low power is the goal? An OCZ Core V2 or Solid would provide better throughput and access times for less than half the wattage draw of even a 5400rpm disk. And you can pick up a 60GB Solid for

    Average? i7 build

No, but if you read enough wikipedia pages you can make people think you know something about anything! j/k WP actually does have really good entries for explaining what the different RAID levels mean and they hint at performance, but you'll really need to either search for benchmarks or...

Help a girl out.....New build 1800.00 to blow!

Sure. If you play games or run CUDA apps. I currently do neither, so it wouldn't be a very wise investment for me. I just like to attempt to keep up on the stuff. For everyone else it seems like a good time and the deals are just going to get sweeter for a couple months.

Help a girl out.....New build 1800.00 to blow!

Hmm, and things are happening even faster than I expected. GTX 260 for $190 after rebate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127361 I don't know anything about evga's step up program, but you might even see prices out of them in that range before the end of the month...

If you're considering SSDs in RAID 0 for absolute performance, I'd go with more, smaller drives on an actual controller with a dedicated processor and cache. Looking at newegg's prices you're currently considering $470 for 2 128GB drives and you might even be looking at $600 if you like the...

Help a girl out.....New build 1800.00 to blow!

Nah, I'm not laughing and doubt anyone is. I remember when we paid $2000 for a 486sx25 w/4mb ram and a 170mb hard drive. No sound card. No CD-ROM. And we gave I believe $15/mb for a 4mb ram upgrade. The last box I built completely from scratch was in 2001, and I spent close to $4k on it...

    Larger monitor higher stress?

Could one of your video cards have died? Or possibly loosened in their slot while changing out the cable to connect the new monitor? I would reinstall the nvidia drivers first in case Windows did something screwy while auto installing drivers for the new monitor.

Help a girl out.....New build 1800.00 to blow!

Dang, that's twice now I've meant to add this is a bad time to be building a new rig. With all the new stuff coming out/just out, you could end up saving yourself a couple hundred dollars waiting even 1 or 2 months. Possibly more if you end up going with the i7. I wouldn't be surprised if the...
