Upgrading my gaming PC - What do you think?

With DDR2 prices at the rock-bottom point they are right now, I might try to look for a PC-8500 set, because the prices aren't much different. The E8500 overclocks nicely, and being able to bump that memory up with it is great, and will provide you with some great performance for your dollar.

    Where's my bottleneck?

The 4870 responds VERY well to increases to CPU speeds. I have the same CPU, and same videocard (2 of them actually), and i'm stock right now but when I tinkered with a very mild overclock (GPU clock/memory speeds at stock), I saw great returns in 3DMV. Try just a mild OC to test it out. Should...

Will OCing my E8500 push my PSU over the edge?

Ah, thanks for the link dude. Never knew about that. Ran Prime95 Small and Large FFT and CPU cores on RealTemp topped out at 42C (cores were always within 1C of each other) so seems like a pretty good base to start from. Only unfortunate thing is the absolute trash thermal dissipation on the...

Need Advice On A New Build.

I would definately do research on people's experiences of the Swiftech H20-120 and specifically the Apogee pump/waterblock it comes with. I bought the H20-220 (which comes with the MCR-220 Rad) and the pump failed within 2 months (bearing shot). Not sure what other people have found, but I...

Will OCing my E8500 push my PSU over the edge?

Hmmm, good point. I'll look at getting something to measure the load.

Will OCing my E8500 push my PSU over the edge?

Yeah, I always overclock slowly but surely, and if it looks liek it can't keep up, that's fine. Just I kind of have everything installed "not permanently" so if I was to replace it, now would be the best time as i'm going to want to make sure i've done the cable management properly before I...

read the book but still unknown (boot to safe mode)

Might be a silly suggestion, but does your keyboard have an F-Lock key?

    Noob questions....PSUs

I have the Antec 1200 case. Moved up to it from the 900 because I couldn't fit all my gear in with a fan setup I wanted. It's pretty overkill unless you're running an overlocked beast with dual videocards and a bunch of hard drives. And it's hernia-inducingly heavy. But it's a very nice case.

what is the best ever processor to overclock, your views

The old AthlonXP Thoroughbreds. Especially the DLT3Cs (or was it the DUT3Cs?). Especially if you got a certain stepping (which I did, from Excalibur). Those things were crazy. 1467MHz stock, I had mine to 2.5GHz 100% stable with a very small and basic WC setup. Damn things ran hot though, OCing...

Will OCing my E8500 push my PSU over the edge?

Hola. After fighting tooth and nail with my new HD4870 cards in CF, finally got all the problems sorted out and everything is stable, so i'm going to start overlocking my E8500. Here is my current system: Intel C2D E8500 Wolfdale (3.16GHz) with Noctua NH-U12P cooler (cores sitting at about 44C...

    PC strongly underperforming.

Definitely check your BIOS version and look at flashing to the newest. Alot of the BIOS updates for the Asus ROG boards have been for CPU and memory compatibility and browsing the Maximus ones seems there's a lot of other CPU tweaks in them. Do the Asus EZ Flash 2 through the BIOS with a USB...

    Couple Questions

The only difference to my knowledge between the 9650 and the 9550 is 170MHz. I see on Newegg that you're looking at about $325 for the 9550 and $550 for the 9650. I'd have a real tough time convincing myself to pay approx 66% more for such a small increase, unless the 9650 somehow overlocks much...

Suggestions to stop games freezing with 2x HD4870s

Hmmmm, well it appears I may have figured out the problem with this, and it might be the videocards after all. Won't be able to verify until I get home from work whether my cards are the version affected, but i'm guessing they are. Found a very long thread on the AMD forums about crashing...
