That's a rough one to diagnose. I have that same case and love it. I've looked at some reviews on that motherboard and notice a lot of others having the same issue. I think you got a bad motherboard. However, I wouldn't rule it out just yet. What RAM do you have installed?

If the CPU support list is correct, it should work with the Kaby Lake, since the Motherboard ships with BIOS 7.00.

How many different USB devices have you tried that do not work in the 3.0 ports? I would try them on a different computer(if available) just to rule out the possibly of the device failure.

The motherboard should be able to handle the weight no problem. However, the CRYORIG H7 cooler would be a lighter option for you if you are concerned with the weight. It is a great cooler and only weighs about 1.3 lbs.

Have you checked for a BIOS update? From what I read you plugged the mouse and keyboard into the USB 3.0 ports that were not working with the external drive or iPhone?
