The firewall on the router often blocks VPN traffic, and ideally you should enable VPN on the router rather than the desktop because putting your desktop on the DMZ opens you computer up to the internet, potentially leaving you vulnerable to attack.
Your best bet is to get a ADSL2+ modem and a separate wireless router as a combination device limits you to only a handful of options.

Are you sure you are entering the right IP for your router? Also, are you running any kind of firewall on your desktop? To eliminate your desktop as a potential problem, what happens when you connect your laptop via wired connection?
How do you have your TV connected? How old is it? It has to do with the pixel layout as well as the technology used. You could trade it in if you were so inclined, but are you that dissatisfied with what you have? It will cost you around $3-400 to find a monitor of similar size at least.
