News Unpowered SSD endurance investigation finds severe data loss and performance issues, reminds us of the importance of refreshing backups

Anyone have concernshe used cheap no name drives and not high quality drives from a major manufacturer? There have been some truly crappy generic hard drives in the past, so why would SSDs be different. Garbage in, garbage out probably applies to this experiment (in my opinion).

News Another RTX 5090 connector melts down, reportedly taking a Redditor's PSU with it

The sensing circuit would be on the PCIe card and not power on if load is unbalanced. The PSU doesn't need to change.

News Another RTX 5090 connector melts down, reportedly taking a Redditor's PSU with it

The PCIe card spec is the PCIe CEM (Card Electromechanical) specification <-- not just a connector spec. And it has all kinds of electrical requirements for PCIe cards. The PCI spec is exactly where this circuit requirement would be documented as a recommended implementation.

News Lenovo joins growing China exodus as manufacturers flee US tariffs — OEM moving production lines to India

If you google it, you'll see several other articles from yesterday on the topic from other sources. Expanding their local presence in India. They currently do not ship out of India, but are planning to in the future.

News RTX 5090 cable overheats to 150 degrees Celsius — Uneven current distribution likely the culprit

You seem out of date. Did you do know the original 12VHPWR spec had an issue where you could partially install it and it would power on and get damaged? (yes, replicated in the lab) The spec was updated and renamed 12V-2x6, which has sense pins that do not connect until fully the plug is...

News Intel concerned about Irish energy costs says report — wants gov to subsidize renewables

It is true that AZ is more reliable than TX. Arizona is #7 and Texas is #28. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings/infrastructure/energy/power-grid-reliability

News Researchers 3D-print fully-functioning microscope in less than 3 hours — total system costs around $60, including lenses, camera, and Raspberry Pi

Either I'm really ignorant or the author is embarrassing himself as he insinuates I can take the 3D files over a any 3D printer and get a usable microscope. Ands with the limited functionality of this device, it's not going to replace any of the microscopes that I've used at work.

News AMD says Intel's 'horrible product' is causing Ryzen 9 9800X3D shortages

AMD always bragging how their latest CPU will beat Intel, then when it does they can't ramp production and blame Intel. Shouldn't they have been preparing for this? Someone at AMD really dropped the ball. Or they are have issues with yields and the factory processes and can't produce enough good...

News Power wire-less motherboards pump 1,500W over 50-pin connector — BTF3.0 standard envisions zero cables between the motherboard, GPU, and power supply

I think this article is mis-titled. This new formfactor is 'cable-less', not 'wire-less'. What is the difference? Wireless power brings up thoughts of power thu the air. This is not that. How much 12v power does USB port provide = 0W <-- USB is a 5v interface. You cannot power the fans with...

News New Bambu Lab flagship 3D printers delayed until 2025 — model aims to add "previously impossible" features

I came to the article to see what are these "previously impossible" features and the article doesn't talk about that at all. That article needs a link to whatever article talks about this, or it really should be changed. Or was it intentional (click bait)?

News Newer Intel CPUs vulnerable to new "Indirector" attack — Spectre-style attacks risk stealing sensitive data; Intel says no new mitigations required

Intel is going to sabotage their own product line to allow AMD to completely trounce them in benchmarks and completely dominate the CPU market. Really?

News Newer Intel CPUs vulnerable to new "Indirector" attack — Spectre-style attacks risk stealing sensitive data; Intel says no new mitigations required

I was thinking, WTF is 'nerfed'? Had to google it. Never heard that slang term before. Is this a common term and I'm just clueless?

News Nvidia's H100 GPUs will consume more power than some countries — each GPU consumes 700W of power, 3.5 million are expected to be sold in the coming...

I show similar math 700W x 24hr * 30 days = 504kw for a month <-- assuming the full 600W quoted in the article. Per EIA data, US households are about 885kW per month. Other sites show 500 to 1000 kW. But overall, it still looks like the article is incorrect. Especially if we applied a 61%...

News Leaked images of Asus' GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB show a 16-pin connector for power

What many people do not know. If you refer to the PCIe CEM specs, the 12VHPWR is basically obsoleted and replaced by a newer version called 12V-2x6 power connector. I'd be surprised if Nvidia is continuing to use the problematic 12VHPR plug design. TomsHW even even did a story about the new...

News Asus Reportedly Mass Producing Cable-Free GPUs

Something is fishy here. I understand you can add a power connector to the motherboard to provide power to a card when it is docked. But where does that power come from? Seems like it will require the motherboard to have additional power cables from a power supply to provide additional power to...
