I don't think it's malware because it's got Malwarebytes on there and it's scanned pretty regularly but I will give sfc and Wisecare a try. Do you have any idea what the root cause could be though? It seems like the errors it causes don't really affect the drives' performance for some reason.

Unfortunately it's the only Windows 8 computer I have. I don't really trust Windows 10 with these HDs because I've heard all the cases of it destroying hard drives, especially if the drives were used in an older OS.

So I've got this old ASUS laptop that's about eight years old with Windows 8.1. All I want to do is use it to copy some files from one external HD to another. The laptop is a mess though. The screen flickers and goes to black constantly and it's extremely slow. The data I'm trying to transfer is...
