I just went through a total uninstall of apple products on my computer, no issues with the picture files at all! I also followed your suggestion for sfc. It successfully repaired a bunch of files. Hopefully that does it! Thanks basroil!

I think I figured out the first problem. I discovered that iCloud photos was hogging the CPU. I unistalled and so far (cross my fingers) haven't had any issues.
