Question Effect of USB 3 cable length at high speed

A cable is effectively a long thin capacitor (with extra inductance from the length). As you increase the switching frequency, data rate, you alter the capacitive reactance value. This is measured in Ohms and is effectively a resistance between the plates/cores. The formula is 1/(2 x pi x...

News AMD CPUs surpass the 40% threshold in latest Steam hardware survey — RTX 5070 emerges as the most preferred GPU within the Blackwell series

Inertia, people don’t always go out and buy the latest and greatest (from whoever) straight away and AMD had to establish themselves as a good alternative. There will have been 8000, 9000, 10000, a few 11000 series CPUs still in use slowly trickling away as the 12/13/14000 series Intel stuff...

    Question zen6 version of 9950x3d?!

Rumours and hype lead to overinflated expectations and disappointment… Best to wait till the release and be happily surprised. If you are looking for a CPU today you pay your money and make your choice. The site has good reviews as do many others.

Build Advice My first full on custom build.

Unless you are chasing high frame rates the 9950x would be a better choice for your build. The x3d parts will fill up a Nvidia xx80 or a xx90 card. The 5060 will not benefit from the x3d cache. Memory : 4 sticks puts a lot of load on the memory controller. You could look at 2x48GB 6000...

News New portable cassette player comes loaded with modern features like Bluetooth, USB-C, and a rechargeable battery

You get/got good quality with quality tapes. I I used to use metal and chrome. With Dolby there was a very very low level of hiss on my (now dead) technics hifi. The difference between ferric tapes and chrome was huge. Look up “techmoan” on YouTube his channel does a good tape type comparison.

News Engineer creates ad-block for the real world with augmented reality glasses — no more products or branding in your everyday life

Thing with ads, they don’t have to grab your attention. You see them often enough and they embed themselves in your psyche. You don’t notice it. It would be interesting to use a pair of these and be made aware of the amount of advertising that is worming its way into our brains. The red...

News Dude, where's my GPU? — Microcenter customer gets backpack-stuffed box instead of RTX 5090

First time I had a processor without pins, 4790k I got the shop to install it.. safe not sorry. I’d suggest asking the bricks and mortar vendor to update the bios if you are buying across ‘generations’ e.g. 9000 series AMD with 600 series motherboards.. if they want a sale they will...

Question RAM ddr4 3200mhz (for AMD) is good on intel cpu?

At the worst it will run at JEDEC standard timings. Try it. Once you have seen it running, reboot and enter bios. Turn on XMP and see if it will post and boot windows. Depending on timing subtleties it may be less stable though that’s doubtful. If you have just bought the memory from a...

Question No POST on new AM5 build - - - and the CPU & DRAM lights are on ?

First steps, download the latest bios for your motherboard. Copy it to a thumb drive. I think the instructions say it must be called MSI.rom (or something very similar. Check the motherboard documentation, on line if needed and confirm. This is to be used for a processorless bios update...

Question Can I get something to improve internet speed with WiFi ?

20 millibits megabits is really low bandwidth…. @editor mb milli bits, Mb megabits, MB mega bytes. Your edit was correcting me pointing out the error in multiple posts. 20mb/s really is a low bandwidth The supplied router provided by SKY in the UK is gigabit wired, with CAT 6 cables that...

My week with Linux: I'm dumping Windows for Ubuntu to see how it goes

I use Kate, simple and easy to use. To correct the drive mount/s I edited the line in Fstab for the shared drive to be what is should have remained and created a new mount point for the “new” drive. I’m not saying that it is difficult, the addition of a drive shouldn’t have displaced the mount...
