So I could just replace the 8 pin with a 6+2 so that it may fit the new GPU?

I'm about to purchase an NVIDIA GTX 970 and I noticed that there are two 6 PCI ports on it. My PSU has a 8 and a 6+2 cord. Can I just switch out the 8 pin with another 6+2? My current card is an ASUS GTX 770 and my PSU is a RoseWill Hive 650W.
