After you replace the hard drive of a laptop is that possible malware hiding in memory or other place be still active ? if so what is the solution!

I have installed Vista but hot keys F11 & F12 make no change in brightness are there any software or some ways I can do this I must mention that the CD that was shiped by laptop only includes driver for win8 and there for currently my graphic card uses a driver that Vista has dedicated. thank
