If you prefer to go cheaper, go with AMD...
It has to be from the same company (AMD/NVIDIA), same manufacturer (ASUS, MSI, PowerColor, etc.), and same GPU model (e.g. a R9 290X will be paired with an R9 290X).
NVIDIA also has a different term for CrossFire, it is called SLI
First let's try to isolate the problem, clear your logs and do a reboot. If any errors shows up we'll try to fix them, if the issue is not yet solved, we'll have to re-produce the problem. So that means putting your computer to sleep and try waking it up.
If nothing showed up, are your SATA cables and power cables connected properly to your hard drive? Make sure they're in there properly, also check in with the motherboard.
If everything is in tightly and it still doesn't show up, try a different SATA port.
