News UK chipmaker Imagination Technologies up for sale — UKCT accuses current owners of stripping the company of its key technologies

But why would another Chinese company try to buy it though. It is already owned by Chinese and they are selling it obviously because it is not a safe investment for the Chinese to hold on to. UK now has a law that allows them to force foreign investors to divest from companies that they feel is...

News China-made DDR5 memory chips use less advanced chipmaking technology — chips are nearly 40% larger than Samsung's DDR5

It is expected, given that CXMT's process node for DDR5 is estimated to be 17.5nm to 18nm, whereas Samsung currently uses an EUV based 12nm process. However, they managed to make it smaller and faster than Samsung's first generation DDR5

News Huawei sticks to 7nm for latest processor as China's chip advancements stall

Benchmarks easily beat Samsung 4nm chips like Google Tensor G4 and is similar to Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, which is TSMC 4nm

News Local and foreign chip manufacturers expand their presence in Vietnam — companies move to Southeast Asia as tensions simmer between China and the U.S.

Why do western companies love to setup production in communist countries. If they want to move away from China why move to another communist country instead of the many democratic countries in that area.

News US Congressman accuses SMIC of making 7nm chips for China, violating U.S. sanctions

Performance of the node itself is better than TSMC's DUV based 7nm and more closer to TSMC's EUV based 7nm. Density is also on par with TSMC 7nm according to TechInsights. Performance of the chip (9010) is much better than any chip that was fabbed on TSMC 7nm. Chip performance is more closer to...

News US Congressman accuses SMIC of making 7nm chips for China, violating U.S. sanctions

According to TechInsights it is 7nm https://www.techinsights.com/blog/smic-7nm-truly-7nm-technology-how-it-compares-tsmc-7nm TSMC is now the leader and considered the benchmark for nodes. TechInsights reverse engineered Huawei chip and concluded that it is equal to TSMC 7nm. TSMC originally did...

News TSMC halts Ascend 910B shipments to firm suspected acting as a Huawei proxy

From the original report it was reported it is an auxiliary chip rather than the main compute chip. It would be hard to trick TSMC into manufacturing the main Chip, because TSMC used to manufacture that chip for Huawei before 2021. If some other company came with that design TSMC would spot that...

News TSMC halts Ascend 910B shipments to firm suspected acting as a Huawei proxy

It is not the Ascend 910B chip. AI cards contains dozens of other types of chips besides the AI Chip. Sophgo sells RISC-V SoCs and micro-controllers. They are commodity items and Huawei can just buy them in the open market. Ascend cards also have HBM memory chips. Currently there are no HBM...

News ASML may be looking to leave the Netherlands — but the Dutch government is desperate to keep it there

This probably has more to do with US sanctions on China rather than Dutch immigration laws. Their share of revenue from China is bigger than US and EU combined. The way US sanctions keep escalating, they are likely to completely lose the China market. If they setup up shop in some neutral...

News Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger: I hope to build chips for Lisa Su and AMD

There would be no need for a fab price war on bleeding edge. With the incoming wave of AI, there is too much demand for leading edge chips and not enough supply even with all the new upcoming leading edge fabs. Legacy chips are where the oversupply would be.

News Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger: I hope to build chips for Lisa Su and AMD

It will depend on if IFS can provide a service as good as TSMC. Samsung is also an IDM that provides foundry services to it's competitors. Companies like Apple and Qualcomm have used their services when they were as good as TSMC.

News Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger: I hope to build chips for Lisa Su and AMD

The license is only for the ISA (the x86 instruction set). x86_32(Intel) and x86_64(AMD) are licensed to each other. But the actual CPU design, microcode, etc are an entirely different thing which is proprietary and not shared between the companies. Anyone can read the ISA, it's actually public...
