Right, so they're not compatible. Hub and controller aren't issue here, but the ever-so-slightly different fans are, did I get it correctly? Shame that the original fans aren't sold pretty much anywhere anymore.
Guess I'll go overkill with this and get a better controller while I'm at it.

Checked the BIOS and there indeed was a newer version. Updated it, and boot issue didn't occur during the few restarts that the process did. Was it really that simple, time will tell.
