News Firm Claims HDDs Can Use Less Power Than SSDs

This article is incredibly disappointing. Scality didn't bother to test or benchmark anything. They say so right in their article. They took power draw numbers for idle/read/write from the manufacturers and multiplied them by the time percentages. That's it. They didn't make any power...

News German Retailer Sells 120 Core i7-11700Ks Before Launch, Benchmarks Arrive

Did the mislabeling also mix up the ST calculations? 8% slower ST (600) than the 5950x (633) but if I divide 600 by 633 I get .947 15% faster ST (600) than the 10700K (506) but if I divide 600 by 506 I get 1.185

News Activist Hedge Fund Calls for Intel to Spin Off Fabs

I think the biggest problem with Intel is that ever since Sandy Bridge they've focused entirely on milking profits instead of improving their products.

News Seagate: We Are On Track with 20TB HAMR HDDs in December

Areal density is usually given in bits, not bytes, so you'd need to divide by 8 for the units to match up. 54 terabits would only equal 6.75 terabytes. Now to line up with modern drives you'd need to reclaim that platter size from your estimate, and use the latest areal density numbers. Not sure...

News Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Reviews Delayed to Sept. 16, RTX 3070 Available On October 15

Well, the reviews are out now and people can judge for themselves whether the results are disappointing or not and if Nvidia was fearful of lackluster sales as a result. And from what I remember about the GCN architecture it was more of an issue with a memory bandwidth hungry architecture than...

News The Best $800 PC Build for Gaming, Streaming and Productivity

Isn't the whole point of NVENC hardware encoding to shift the load off of the CPU and onto the GPU? Meaning the helpfulness of the feature would have nothing to do with the modestness of the GPU. Rather, it would help when the CPU is struggling to encode while running the game at the same time.

News Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Reviews Delayed to Sept. 16, RTX 3070 Available On October 15

That's a pretty strong claim. I guess we'll see once the NDA lifts and reviews come out. And whether or not any reviewers mention shipping delays.

News No More Lip Service: Twitch, Game Platforms Still Ignore Hate and Harassment

If you walk into a theater screaming obscenities and racial slurs and making threats would you be surprised if they kicked you out? Would you expect them to let you back in once a different movie is playing? Will you be outraged at the other patrons if they don't stick up for your right to do...

News Intel Donates Masks to Healthcare Workers Fighting Coronavirus

Sorry, I should have said the 100% infection rate was a figure I'd heard for the spread of an uncontained global pandemic. But I can't seem to find any reputable sources for it so I should retract that statement. Anecdotally, the WHO reported 2055 health care workers in China had been infected...

News Intel Donates Masks to Healthcare Workers Fighting Coronavirus

As best I understand it, properly worn masks do help prevent infection. Emphasis on properly worn, because people new to wearing masks have been found to constantly fiddle with them, taking them off and putting them back on, touching their faces etc. Things that actually increase the likelihood...

How to Get Microsoft Office for Free (or Under $50)

If you have to charge extra for "guaranteed not fake" products you are absolutely selling "guaranteed fake" products.

[SOLVED] Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 4GB Review: This Turing Fails the Test

I think the GPU itself makes sense, but this partner board doesn't. For users who would otherwise have to purchase a new PSU you can charge a price premium. Take that away and actually charge more for it, while offering less performance per dollar? I've never understood the partner board...

Battlefield V's Lack of Battle Royale Blamed for Poor EA Financial Results

I watched a few minutes of a guy streaming it the other day. It didn't look bad and he seemed to be having a lot of fun. Until an endscreen showed 3 characters, 2 of which were female. He spent the next 5 minutes whining about how female characters "broke immersion" for him, despite not having...

Battlefield V's Lack of Battle Royale Blamed for Poor EA Financial Results

Not to mention all the hype surrounding Ray Tracing, finding out it was going to be a $600 feature (until the rtx 2060 was announced), and then the delays. To say nothing of the general pushback against EA after the Battlefront debacle.

How Would You Build a Video-Editing PC?

I'm not so sure it's accurate to say "-most files these days are stored in the cloud." in the context of video files, when you consider the average upload speeds available to the majority of people out there. Most of the content creators I'm familiar with still have rather sizable investments in...
