News TSMC and President Trump announce $100 billion investment in the US, including three fabs

There is also the tit for tat effect when tariffs are placed on your own exports making them too expensive for consumers in those countries. China has just placed tariffs on American beef and many grains. It is good for countries like Australia, who believe in free markets, as we can swoop in...

News TSMC and President Trump announce $100 billion investment in the US, including three fabs

I an asking whether it is the same 3 fabs already announced last year or whether they are new ones. No need to be nasty

News Man who lost $780 million in Bitcoin in a landfill now wants to buy the entire dump before city closes the site

This is the first time anyone has proposed to do real mining for coins For some reason I had to reword this about seven times to get past the sites filter despite saying nothing controversial or critical.

News Scientists develop the world’s first carbon-14 diamond battery, offering a 5,000-year lifespan — the device uses radioactive decay to generate low...

One microwatt per battery - it's hard to imagine a huge number of applications for it. The carbon is sourced from used nuclear reactor graphite blocks. The diamond coating stops radiation escaping from the graphite but you definitely don't want to break one open. One article I read says they...

News Huawei trying to poach TSMC employees with 3X salary

The only way they would pay 3x salary is if gives them some level of TSMC secret sauce especially since salaries in mainland China are normally much less than Taiwan. Sadly the Chinese legal system will just ignore IP theft if it helps China.

News Intel outlines plan to break free from TSMC manufacturing — 70% of Panther Lake at Intel fabs, Nova Lake almost entirely in-house

I suspect Intel might be more profitable if they outsourced all fab work. Of course this doesn't help the US become less dependent on TSMC. An alternative might be to sell off their fabs to another US company who could then pick up additional work from other sources. Fabless companies seem to...

News HP ink cartridge DRM bypass demonstrated using physical man-in-the-middle-attack

As stated in the original article inkjet printers are sold at a loss. In fact, some basic models are essentially given to retailers for free. The manufacturer has to then make their profit from high priced ink. It has been this way for a long time and I'm sure the manufacturers often wonder how...

It deserves a special place in history for being the first ever general purpose microprocessor.

News Linux takes 4.76 days to boot on an ancient Intel 4004 CPU — CPU precedes the OS by 20 years

Back in the late 70's when I was responsible for developing my first data communications product I used a Motorola 6809 processor. I remember how great it was to have the luxury of 8K bytes of UV erasable EPROM and 8K bytes of static RAM to play with when compared to "earlier" processors like...

News Linux takes 4.76 days to boot on an ancient Intel 4004 CPU — CPU precedes the OS by 20 years

I'm amazed that someone could put enough effort into all the emulation and memory paging required to make a 4 bit Intel 4004 do this. The chip was initially developed to run a calculator. It can only directly address 1,280 4 bit RAM locations and 32,768 bits of ROM equivalent to 4,096 bytes...

News Gelsinger: Intel Wants Apple Back

Extremely unlikely. The manufacturing cost per M1 chip to Apple is quite low. The majority of the cost of a commercial chip is helping pay back the huge amount of development cost and profit margin. Intel chips are likely more expensive to manufacture than the Apple M1.
