I'm not sure why you would go for 4690K or 4790K. In tech world they're outdated. For the same price you can grab the newer versions i5-7600K or i7-7700K which will perform a little better.

That's not true. More cores doesn't mean better, we're talking about games. Faster single core performance = better. That's why R5 1600 outperforms R7 1700 in games.

In gaming R5 1600 & 1600X actually outperform R7 1700 & 1700X.

Cheapest way to get better performance is to at least get 2X4GB DDR3 kit or 2X8GB if you have the money. But 3GB of VRAM might be limiting you. i7 2600 still performs good at games considering how old it is. If you want to build a new system then wait for AMD and Intel to drops their new chips...

FX-6300 will bottleneck RX 470. R5 1400 would give you the best performance (cheapest route) but R5 1600 is the best performance/value wise (out of AMD's current CPU's). On top of that it's powerful enough to do much more than just gaming.

4790K will even handle GTX 1080 without bottleneck. If you can afford a 1070 then you should totally get it. You get most fps for your money. If not 6GB GTX 1060 or 8GB RX 480 is obvious choice. Asus, MSI, newer EVGA cards perform pretty well keeping Pascal GPU's cool.

R5 1600 is a major upgrade over 8120. You wouldn't need R7 1700 since 1600 will be able to handle all your needs.

R5 1600 comes with Wraith Spire cooler. It's the best value.

It could be dried up thermal paste. If I were you, I'd try reapply new thermal paste. I'd recommend Arctic Silver 5.

Once your GTX 970 comes in, install it (make sure you uninstall old drivers with DDU, restart and install new drivers). Then play some games and report back. You shouldn't have any problems. I know someone with your CPU, few months ago he added a GTX 980 and he has no problems what's so ever.
