Start Task Manager and click on the Startup tab. That will show what's getting started when you boot up. You can right-click and disable non-Microsoft items in that list. Be careful not to disable your antivirus program.

FWIW, MSCONFIG has a BOOT tab with the option for no GUI boot. And you didn't state your PC brand, but on Dell PCs, you can get to the BIOS via F12 at the start of booting up.

I've used the free version of Macrium Reflect to clone the HDD onto the SSD with success many times. Just be sure the SSD has as much free space as the used part of the HDD you're cloning. You can use MSCONFIG to set the boot order like you want it.

One thing about making partitions is that they increase the distance the HDD's access arm has to move thereby increasing seek time and adversely affecting performance. One more reason to avoid them most of the time.
