    Is it possible that this HDD doesn't support AHCI mode. Did you try to change the mode to IDE (legacy) for the port that you attaching the HDD to?

    If I understood well the problem, your solution sounds perfectly OK. Maybe also you could ensure that these wires don't touch the cooler as maybe that's the high temperature that caused the isolation to become more fragile.
