fails to start

Laptop will not turn on. Power button is lit up and green battery light is on. CPU fan starts for half a second and then nothing. I came home last night to find my laptop had gone to sleep. Nothing unusual there, but upon pressing the power button nothing happened. I thought it had powered off...
