hdd spiking

When I'm browsing and when I shut down the computer, my HDD seems to spike to 100% for a 5-8 seconds before going back down to 1-5% again. I'm not sure why this is happening, it only started to happen after I had started to play a heavily modded video game (TES Oblivion) which was like a week...
