When I reconnect the HDMI cable, the monitor turns back on but my programs close and the mouse does not display on any windows except for the taskbar. I have updated ALL drivers so I have zero clue about what the issue is

I have an Asus MG279 as a second monitor for my PC and I hooked up my buddy's Xbox to it and for some reason it will only output to 720p 60. It's a 1440p monitor so I'm curious as to why this is. Any ideas? I've perused the OSD menu and can't find anything that makes sense.
