Hi, I'm looking to build a rendering/gaming machine on £1400ish but I'm not to good with computer components/names. I need 16gb ram at least and i want a motherboard that is sli compatible and decent at overclocking. Any improvements to what i'm currently thinking will be greatly appreciated.

Power supply tiers and ratings and picking the right sized case with the right amount of fans have always confused me so i would be grateful for any advice for these

Solution

£1400ish (in your post) or £1000ish (in your title) budget?

Your initially-selected i7-5820k (3.3GHz, 6-core, 12-threads) is a good choice. However, the current price in your location is £309.06. A better alternative would be the i7-6700k (4GHz, 4-core, 8-threads), which is cheaper (at $299.99) than the i7-5820k. The i7-6700k is part of the recently-released Skylake family, allowing you to future-proof your rig compared to the Haswell-E released last year ago. Some argue that the Haswell-E might be a dead upgrade path than the Skylake. Price-wise and performance-wise, you get a better deal with the new i7-6700k versus the i7-5820k.

The PSU requirement for a GTX 970 is only at 500W. I selected a 750W Tier-2 PSU so that in case you will SLI in the near future, your PSU doesn't have to be replaced.

Note that the total cost of £1375.46 already includes Monitor, Keyboard/Mouse, OS, and ODD (just in case you haven't got these already for this new build). Just subtract whatever you already have to bring down the total cost.

Thank you for the suggestion and i apologize for not being clear in my title. Unfortunately i am slightly confused as to what you mean by the 6 core processor being a dead upgrade path. Do you mean that intel will release an upgrade to skylake using the same socket as the 6700k?

There's a high probability. Intel has already announced Skylake's successor - Kirby Lake - and pushed back the release of 10nm (Cannonlake) processors. Based on reports, Kirby Lake will have the same 1151 Sockets.

Solution

Eventually, yes.
