Hello I work in 3D and video production and am about to make a new rig.

Although I have models in perspective, I thought it would be nice any people with insight on the subject to explain this. What to look for in a CPU for 3D Modeling and Rendering (I'll render Video too anyhow).

Modeling on my package is mainly a One Core task. Rendering on the other hand seems to grab whatever there is to grab.

Right now I'm on the verge between 3930K and the 4770K. The first is about 240$ more expensive and more suited for Rendering. The 3.5GHz of the 4770K seem more suited for Modeling.
Here's a comparison: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-4770K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-3930K

I don't update my rigs that often. Would I in, for example, 3 years wished I had dropped that extra money for the 3930K?

More over, if I go that high for a CPU would it be worth to wait for the 4930K since range is about the same?

Thanks for any knowledgeable insight
Cheers

If you have the money, buy the 3930K. Not only will it completely trounce the 4770K in rendering, the 3930K (also) has an unlocked multiplier so you could easily set it to anything you like up to its turbo speed (which is 3.8GHz) on the stock heatsink/fan to increase its single threaded performance. I would imagine that it could be stable at 4GHz with all six cores enabled and rendering. The i7-3930K, if you have the money for it, is crazy good.

The 4770K would be a good choice, however if the budget is there, and you do this for a living might want to wait for the 4930K, better performance, the socket 2011 can use true quad channel DRAM while the 4770K is limited to dual channel. Socket 2011 is for the true power users and with the rendering and other you would benefit from it

Thanks.
My local stores don't have the 4930 yet. Do yours have? Apparently the price won't be very far off the 3930. They seem rather the same though.
