Hi all,

Before I fork over 100 dollars for Comcast to come out here, I thought I would ask here for some troubleshooting tips. After many "test timed out" errors on Speedtest.net, I finally got it to show my DL speed is a dismal 0.22 Mbps. I believe I am paying for 12.

PC Specs: 2nd gen i3, 8 Gigs of RAM, 128 SSD

So far I have tried:
-Power cycling both modem and router
-Using a different Ethernet cable
-Using a USB wireless adapter instead of ethernet cable
-Plugging an Ethernet cable directly into the modem getting rid of the router
-Scanning PC with malwarebytes and hitman (nothing found)

One other odd thing: at certain times of the day, my speeds are better than others. Way better. Like, actually able to stream a video better. My wireless is secured. No one else is on the internet. All my PC's are free and clear of malware, and are not torrenting or downloading (at least at the time).

Anything I can do to troubleshoot would be much appreciated.

First: Depends on what you are paying, If it is 12MBps then you are getting a theoretical download speed of 12/8Mbps, one is Bit and one is Byte.

Second: Wireless connection can varies more overtime than direct.

Third: Is this recent or have it been going on since your first registration? If it is recent, your ISP could be having renovation or some similar sort. If it isn't you should contact your ISP for questioning.

Finally: Is your wireless router a good one? Some old wireless router isn't that good at range. You might also what to check your wireless settings @ 192.168.0.1, I believe it varies for certain people.

If all else does not work you should contact your ISP to clarify it for you.
If plugging directly in to the modem results in the same 0.22, yes have the Comcast guy come out.

I don't know about Comcast, bur Cox would only charge if they determined that it was inboard the box on the side of the house, AND you had them fix it. Diagnostics was not a $100 charge.

Log into your modem look at the noise level and power level if there low or too high you have an issue. Look at your cable splitters...to many or to old can cause an issue. Check where the cable meets your house, make sure it tight and sealed. Look at your power and cable wires going to your house. Over time tye can go bad if they rub on a tree. Your ISP may have a bad dns server that your logging into or an overloaded one. Check with Comcast to see if there more then one local Dns server in your area or use google or open dns server to see if it a bad server.

[removed, as I seem to have posted this in the wrong thread. there was one where the poster was considering leaving AT&T DSL becasue of problems with it for comcast, not sure where it went but this is not it.]

Good for you. I misread his Original post as he had dsl and was considering moving to cable, actually I think I was in a different post and when the browser crashed [firefox need s a reinstall i think] I reopened the wrong one.

I could tell him to pull up 192.168.100.1 and post his signal levels and error logs I suppose. Unless he has a dory [modem+wireless all in one with phone too] and then its 10.0.0.1 unless its in bridge mode and then he'd have to PM me his MAC so I could look it up in scout but anyway, my mistake.

The entire post was about phone wires, for DSL. I shall edit it and remove it now.
